The Butterfly-Catepillar Dynamic in Relationships
Do you sometimes feel like you have to choose between being yourself or being in the relationship? Like everytime you get excited about something, you're afraid your partner may shut it down?
Or do you perhaps feel like you're the only one thinking about practical things? Like if you stopped planning, everything would just fall apart?
These are symptoms of a common dynamic we see in relationships, where:
• One partner is like a BUTTERFLY; they love to try new things, have new experiences.
• The other partner is like a CATEPILLAR — slow, steady, and calculated.
The Butterfly often feels trapped and constrained in the relationship. They often feel like their wings are clipped. They can't fly because their Caterpillar partner says, "Why do you keep spending so much money carelessly? Why can't you stick to one thing?"
The Caterpillar feels they're being dragged along in the relationship. They take time to feel into what's right for them, and formulate a well-thought-out approach. But before they can do that fully, they're being dragged into the next thing by their Butterfly partner - another new interest or new idea. And if they are resistant, their Butterfly partner says, "Why are you staying stagnant? Why are you holding us back?"
Both partners feel they cannot be free to be themselves in the relationship.
What's happening at a deeper level?
Butterfly
The Butterfly partner is always chasing new shiny things. They find it hard to stay and complete something from start to end. They get bored easily and want to move on to the next shiny thing, and are never truly fulfilled.
What they need is to come home to and be grounded in themselves. The problem is they feel unsafe coming into their bodies, because there is so much emotional material in there that they're afraid to face.
The emotions have been accumulating since they were a child, where in order to be the "good girl" or "good boy", they suppressed all emotions seen as "bad" - sadness, anger, jealousy, etc. In addition, they may have childhood trauma that's scary to unpack.
To heal and break free, they must face the discomfort of staying present, and confront their suppressed emotions (with professional guidance if needed).
They think it's their partner who is constraining them, but it's actually themselves.
Catepillar
The Caterpillar partner's struggle is that they're always half-hearted about things. Whether it is relationship, career or life choices, they are never fully committed. They may say "yes", but there's always a part of them that feels otherwise.
This is because as a child, doing what others want and expect of them, and suppressing their own needs, was what they needed to do to be accepted. Now as adults, they've lost touch with what they really want. Everything they "think" they want, comes from societal conditioning.
To heal and break free, they must start to connect with their emotions, which hold the most authentic truth of what they need to be truly fulfilled in life.
They think their partner does not see and hear their views and needs, but actually they're not seeing themselves.
A brighter future
The potential both partners can attain when they heal is this:
The Butterfly learns to hone their strengths of creativity, passion, ideas, vision, while staying grounded.
The Caterpillar learns to hone their strengths of structure, stability, clarity, while continuing to be inspired and excited about life.
Both learn from each other, balance each other, and ultimately, grow into greater versions of themselves together.
Relationships are vehicles for growth.
They bring out our patterns beautifully so we can break through to achieve greater fulfilment.
An intentional relationship is one where both partners work on their patterns, rather than blame each other.
