Mental and Relationship Wellness in Singapore

If you're here, you probably have a personal or relationship challenge you want to work on. After more than 7 years in this field, we'd like to share as much as possible about your options, so you can make a clear, informed decision about what's the best next step for you.

The field of mental wellness and relationship support in Singapore is like the medical profession. There are first-aiders, GPs and specialists.

1. Counsellors from free and subsidised community services are like first-aiders. Sessions are ad-hoc and irregular. You usually can't choose your counsellor. As counsellors typically have heavy client load, it's hard for them to give deep, personalised interventions beyond generic solutions. The session can help give the person a space to talk about their problems, and they may get referrals to other relevant social services through the government network. But it can't go deeper to resolve root causes of issues and bring long lasting change.

2. Psychiatrists are like emergency medicine for cases where psychological issues are affecting your daily functioning and safety. They prescribe drugs that alter the chemistry of your brain to relieve only the symptoms. The drugs can have side effects such as sleep disturbances, weight changes, sexual dysfunction. The drugs can't resolve root causes such as emotional trauma, which is necessary to bring long term change. They are medical doctors and not trained in emotional listening or processing.

3. Most private therapists are like GPs. They use generic psychological methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and talk therapy to approach a variety of mental health challenges. Relationship therapists typically use Gottman Method and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), which focus on how the couple fights and gives them tools to repair connection. But all these methods do not go deeper into healing the trauma or root cause. Sessions are generally ad hoc; you book an appointment whenever you like, which doesn't bring greater results compared to a structured, consistent approach.

4. A few experienced therapists who use deeper methods are like specialists and surgeons. These methods include somatic/body therapy, shadow work, parts work (e.g. internal family systems) that are like performing “surgery” to remove the root cause. These bring the most long lasting result, but it is also important for the person to learn and develop their own internal regulation and processing skills to become more emotionally resilient.

5. Trainers and coaches who teach mindfulness, emotional regulation, and relationship skills are like physiotherapists. They give you strengthening and practices to boost and maintain their emotional and relational wellbeing. However, they may be ill-equipped to deal with more complex issues such as infidelity and intense trauma.

Our private therapy programme with Kavitha and Kester are a combination of 4 and 5. They use deep therapeutic methods to address underlying trauma and shift the hidden patterns shaping your life and relationships — bringing lasting freedom, peace, and fulfilment. You’ll also develop the inner awareness and skills to support your lifelong growth, long after the programme ends.

For couples, this programme will also equip you and your partner with the tools to cultivate emotional safety, deepen connection, and navigate relationship challenges as they arise with greater clarity and confidence — so you can build a lifelong partnership grounded in growth, trust, and closeness.

Kavitha and Kester’s methods are best suited for those who want to empower themselves, rather than remain passive recipients of treatment. The success of the programme depends on your willingness to take charge of your own journey, engage in intentional self-reflection, and be proactive with the exercises throughout the process.

Deciding Your Next Step

The most suitable option for you depends on your level of seriousness and commitment, and how much you value the outcome you want.

If you are just exploring and are unsure of what you want — ad-hoc sessions from free or subsidised community counselling services and generic therapists are best.

If you are goal-focused and are moderately serious — structured sessions with specialist therapists and learning skills with trainers and coaches are best.

If your level of seriousness, commitment and value are high, we welcome you to book a 60-minute in-person trial session with Kavitha and Kester.
